Old Maude locomotive restoration

The steam locomotive known as Old Maude is on display across from the Blairmore post office.  She was last restored in the early 1990s, and is now in need of more work, including short-term repairs, longer term restoration and maintenance, and permanent shelter from the elements.  The Crowsnest Heritage Initiative is looking for volunteers to form a committee which will undertaking the planning, fund-raising and implementation of this work.

If you would like to help, please send an email to info@crowsnestheritage.ca with ‘Old Maude’ in the Subject line.

Coleman Miners' Union Hospital

Coleman Miners’ Union Hospital

The historic Miner’s Union Hospital is at 7805 – 18th Avenue in Coleman, next to the Crowsnest Pass Museum. It is owned by the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass and has recently been restored for continued use a drop-in centre by the Coleman Seniors. The photo at right shows the former hospital prior to restoration work. This project is a good example of the appropriate re-use of a heritage building which now satisfies a modern-day community need in a comfortable and stylish manner.

One of the concessions made by the International Coal and Coke company following the 1905 strike was to provide the land, electricity, water and coal for a miner’s hospital in Coleman. Designed and built by local contractors Edmund Disney and Wes Johnston, the Miner’s Union Hospital had seventeen beds, a convalescence sun room and, upstairs, accommodation for two nurses. The hospital operated from 1906 to 1949 when a new hospital was opened in Blairmore, then was used as a union hall and community centre. The building was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 1986. The Miner’s Union Hospital and other historic buildings can be located on the Coleman Heritage Driving Tour map.

Outdoor Heritage Signage

A system of over fifty outdoor interpretive heritage signs helps bring the history of the Crowsnest Pass to both visitors and residents. Some of the signs containing text and historic photographs are located to enhance the self-guided Heritage Driving Route and Community Walking Tours, but many others are located at places of heritage significance and present information to both the history-hunter and the casual passer-by. All signs carry the Discover Crowsnest Heritage logo and are in our distinctive colors.

Heritage signage can be divided into three classes: kiosks, signs, and plaques. Kiosks exist in the four major population centres of the Pass to set historical context and to advise readers of some of the things that the community has to offer. About fifty Signs concentrate on specific topics or areas, and altogether present an overview of this area’s amazing past. Plaques placed on commercial buildings of historical significance primarily target pedestrians. Future plans may include placing smaller plaques for historically significant residences.

The text and photographs on each kiosk, sign and plaque was meticulously researched by a volunteer committee of the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative. The sign structures were designed by students at the Blairmore campus of the Nippon Institute of Technology. Funding has come from provincial and federal grants, and some private donations from companies such as Teck; no municipal funding was utilized, although municipal administration assist on some planning issues and town public works forces are occasionally relied upon for minor works.
